Brazilian artist Henrique Oliveira shows absolutely no respect to art galleries’ walls! It’s as if he has the supernatural ability to control trees, making them burst through the walls at his own whim.
When Oliveira was a student in São Paulo, there was a plywood fence outside his window that began to peel and fade into different layers and colors. The wood, called tapumes in Portuguese, is ubiquitous in the Brazilian city. When the fence was dismantled, Oliveira collected the remains and used them as raw materials for his senior show.
Now, as a professional artist, Oliveira has clearly stepped up his game. After scavenging the dumpsters of São Paulo, the artist paints peels of wood after they are curled onto a PVC pipe skeleton. Oliveira chooses wood pieces that are already splitting and dying because they perfectly represent the decay of life in the city.

This is me at that moment when someone walks in the door when I’m having some delicious tacos and they drop some big announcement like “I’m getting a sex change!” or “I’m buying 4 more cats!” or “I found an alien corpse in my closet!” and while I want to address it, I’m hoping it’s not rude to keep eating. Because I’m going to keep eating.

”Everybody can be great, because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” - Martin Luther King Jr.

Cotton Grass, Iceland
Photo: Jennifer JesseThis photograph was taken in July of 2010 while hiking in a region of Iceland called Landmannalaugar. People come to this area in order to see the colorful rhyolite mountains. During our trip we had come across small amounts of cotton grass along the roads, but I never expected to see such a huge field of it. This image represents what Iceland is all about. Just when you think the landscape can’t surprise you any more, something else even more amazing comes along.

Armisen and Brownstein text each other every night before bed. Brownstein says of their friendship, “Sometimes I think it’s the most successful love affair either of us will ever have.” Both claim that it wouldn’t work if they were romantically involved. “It would be colder, because we’ve both treated our romantic relationships in a cold way,” Armisen says. “Carrie and I are more romantic than any other romantic relationship I’ve ever had—that sense of anticipation about seeing the other person, the secret bond. But things don’t become obligatory. I’m not thinking, I’m doing this because you’re my girlfriend; I’m thinking, I love Carrie.”

Scott Avett on printing the 2011 tour poster
this is amazing
Love this. Lino-cuts are my favorite printmaking method and the Avetts are just great. Saw them in concert last New Years Eve in Asheville and I’m definitely going to miss seeing them this year. Looking forward to 2012 all the same!
